Hello SCAdians! I have a question about the heads of weapons, specifically polearms. The Marshall's handbook is pretty vague about this. I want to create an english bill, that has a head which can, essentially trap and control enemy weapons and shields (as old manuscripts recommend). I want the head to be sturdy enough to beat down, trap, wrench, twist, and overpower enemy weapons (not to mention crush through uncommitted blocks). So I was thinking of using additional pieces of rattan to augment the structural integrity if the head. Essentially, have pieces of rattan coming off the main haft of the weapon configured something like this:
I would then cover this rattan with rigid foam, and then with padding.
Is this a legal construction method?
So from what I'm getting from this is you are looking to construct something similar to this.
Now keep in mind I'm no marshal, or experienced weapon maker, but it seems to me that while yes, it would be a perfectly acceptable construction (near as I can tell) I don't see this being used very effectively outside of Melee, unless you put it on a very short haft, in which case it would be a two-handed weapon at best and you would require the appropriate authorization (Though since you are planning on building this thing you probably already have that.) And depending on how long your haft is all you would really need as far as padding is concerned are a couple of thrusting tips on the ends, and 1/2" progressive give between the weapon haft and striking surface. I haven't had the chance to scan the image, but if anyone here can give me advice on my blazon, I'd appreciate it. I haven't been able to run it past my local heralds yet. Blazon as I have it figured is:
