TOPIC: Favourite SCA song

Favourite SCA song 2 years, 7 months ago #841

What is your favourite SCA song, period or post-period, funny or serious, whatever it is let us know.

Personally I have always liked The Champion by Edward Zifran of Gendy though I recently heard The Peasant Knight by Mistress Rosalind Jehanne and it has been vying for position as my favourite.

There is a song I was reading a few days ago about swashing and not using shields. I cant think of the name of it now, but it described my persona to a T.

Mercedes Lackey has a number of CDs of music from her Valdemar novels...there is a song that tells the story of the enchanted sword "Need". I don't remember the title of the song off the top of my head, but the recording is great. The music has a heavy drum that conjures up forge hammers and war drums, and the woman who sings it has a deep, raspy voice that sounds like smoke tastes...It's very moving when sung by the light of a fire, even if it isn't really an SCA song, per se...

Second best has got to be "Naughty Young Maids of AnTir" LOL

Oh, my! There are SOOOOO many!!! "Favorite" is just not a word I can relate to (for anything from foods to moves to SCA songs!). So, here's a list of my "top ten" (in no particular order) LOL

By Mistress Wyndreth Berginsdottir (though I think she may have changed her name)
Shield my Kinsman
Lifeblood
Savage Daughter

By Master Owen Alun
A Song of Northshield

On CD: (I likely have the names of the songs wrong - I don't have them in front of me and I'm going by memory - which is a bad thing!)

Performed by Blackmore's Knight
Down at the Renaissance Fair
Queen for a Day
The Crowning of the King
The Fires Burn at Midnight

Performed by The Whiskey Bards
Old McDonald Had a Deformed Farm
What do you do with a Drunken Sailor

The Crowning of the King

That name made me think of another awesome song, Burden of the Crown by Baldwin of Erebor.

Is it just be or does An Tir seem to have quite a bit more music than the rest of the kingdoms?

Re: Favourite SCA song 2 years, 7 months ago #887

I'm not sure, but your message did make me think of my favourite song to hear (as opposed to perform). My Lady, My Land by the late Cillian an Sealgair. Hands down the best kingdom anthem of all the ones I've heard (which admittedly isn't that many). I just wish I was able to sing it.

?? And how do you figure that? Just curious.

Re: Favourite SCA song 2 years, 7 months ago #966

I belong to the Kingdom of Aethelmearc and was going through a collection of songs dedicated to the SCA at one of our demos. I figured there would be more dedicated to our own kingdom since it was made by a native to here but An Tir actually had a vast collection.

Maybe whoever put it together had a knack for An Tir though

Re: Favourite SCA song 2 years, 7 months ago #967

That could be. There was a time when every bardic circle I went to had at least one "I was recently in Calontir and heard this song..."

The Peasent Knight is also sung and recorded by Samantha Moore aka Lady Ambra on the Raven Boy Music lable
