TOPIC: Dance! - Have you any experience with it?

Re: Dance! - Have you any experience with it? 2 years, 7 months ago #605

Unfortunately I have neither the necessary free time nor the funds to do so... Alas.

I think that entirely depends on how much Dancing you do, whilst you play with the fire. ;D

Joking aside I'd definitely consider it a type of dancing.

I would love to learn the Northerners dancing... Alas our group seems more focused on the India belly dancing... Though I used to dance throughout my school years and into my adult life....

Thus I may be able to teach myself with videos... LOL Band Stand taught me a lot.... Damn I think I just dated myself LOL....

So If anyone has links they wish to share I am interested...

Medb - you are a fine teacher! I enjoy your dance class very much. I'm just glad my Lady has decided to learn to dance with me! I look forward to learning more...

Ealasaid - I shall work on converting the files tomorrow!

Madyn - You are a horrible, horrible liar. But I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. Hopefully I'll be able to do something more productive for you and your lady, next time I'm up in the Tir Bannog area!

We sort of came to the SCA through our involvement with an early dance troup. We live in a university town and the professor of historical dance at the U, organizes the troup. We perform at Ren Faires and local arts events. Our music director is in the SCA, as our a few of our musicians. There is also an English Country Dance once a month, here in town.

I've yet to go to an SCA event where there is dancing and I have to admit, I am a little intimidated.

As someone that has seen more than a few of Frederick's shows, I can attest that you should indeed come out! He and his troop of dancers are the stuff of legend around here, and while his is not the only fire troop in these parts, they're certainly among my favorites to watch.

As a bonus, I know that Dragon's Mist generally holds their Revels events every friday wherein they cheerfully teach dance to any of those willing. Tragically for me, I have a rather thorough "Must not make myself look silly in front of others" gene that seems to allow disco dancing in crosswalks with my wife groaning and claiming she doesn't know me right beside, but doesn't let me do little foot-bouncey steppy sorts of period dances. And that combined with a pain disorder just doesn't really lend itself well to the whole idea.

It's not for everyone, I suppose, but for those that Do wish to get into dancing, I know that those that Do have great fun with it. Just don't fall into the dilemma wherein you don't allow yourself to try it for fear that until you get good at it, you'll look ridiculous(Much like Rockband or Dance Dance Revolution, you're either amazing, or embarrassing, it's totally not fair.). With period dancing, EVERYONE ends up looking a little ridiculous by today's standards.

(Footnote: Dancing in the Medieval era was primarily meant as a "Look at my clothes, aren't they fancy? I can afford All This Fabric!" in a court sense, so expect a lot of turns, spread arms, and curtsies. Oh god the curtsies. My knees groan just THINKING about all those bloody curtsies...)
