TOPIC: Where to buy loose rings?

Where to buy loose rings? 2 years, 7 months ago #226

Let's face it, chainmail is fun (time consuming, but fun) to make!
My husband had purchased rings from www.theringlord.com/ in the past, but they have since changed their inventory/stock system.
Does anyone have experience buying bulk rings from other vendors? Is there anyone you'd recommend?

Honestly I would probably say to make your own. As long as you can fine good wire it'll come out the same if your putting it together. It takes a little more time to make the rings but not enough to overwhelm you. If I hear of anything though I'll let you know.

No, I haven't dealt with other suppliers. However, I have also made rings on my own. If you want to make them in any great amount this can become quite a project, so I can understand needing to be able to find a reliable supplier that you can purchase the rings from. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Ringlord is pretty good, and depending on your material of choice, you CAN make your own rings with a hand-drill, a mandrel bit of appropriate size, and some good old fashion elbow grease. However, that being said, there are some rings you should NOT attempt to make!

Aluminum rings! Do not attempt to make these yourself. Ringlord runs their aluminum wire through an extruder of some kind. Basically, their 14ga wire becomes 16ga rings. If they didn't, the wire would be much softer, much looser, and much more of a pain in the arse than it already is to make it keep its shape.

Depending on the type of chainmail you're making, just go with non-flex steel wire. The flex wire will be a pain in the arse to get it to keep a uniform shape when winding. Also, obtain a good jeweler's saw. You'll need it. Make sure to point out to the salesperson that you want one that can cut steel, otherwise, your time with the snips is going to drive you mad, and also make your rings look like poop.

Unfortunately, we live in an apartment so I don't think cutting our own will work terribly well. We tried once at an old apartment using wire wrapped around a steel rod and cut with a dremel, but the dremel wasn't efficient and was still quite loud. Maybe once we have our own garage/yard, but for now it's not ideal.

Thank you for the info though!
