A Garb Odyssey

Written by Aelfwyn of Englefield

When deciding what kind of persona I wanted to do I first looked at the garb. There were a few places that I was interested in a few time periods but I just wasn't sure. Then I remembered that I was going to be the one making the garb. Oh boy. That meant I needed something relatively easy.

So I went Anglo Saxon. It was easy and I liked it. I found a name and I found the era. Now all I needed to do was make the garb. First I did research. I'm not a garb nazi but I thought that after five...

As I am the one that asked for this section to showcase SCA's writers, I figured I needed to be the first to post to it.... I have been writing short stories and poetry most of my life.... Much of my writing is inspired by the happening in my life at the time on conception.... This story is no different.... Being a 44 yr old disabled human hsa placed the spotlight on a lot of the mis-conceptions people have of our "differences"... This story shows that although we are different we all have a...

Dangerous Trends: The Importance of Image part I

Written by Aindrias Mac-Solamh

There comes a time in every career as a SCAdian wherein we have seen this in one form or another. Everyone has, and there are very few who would be willing to attempt to downplay it, at least, few who aren't part of the problem in the first place. The behavior I'm talking about isn't restricted to the Society by any means, you see it in the homeowners association, the workplace, and in just about every other social circle known to man. It is the behavior of "Better than you", wherein the...

Sorry for not posting often. Your about to hear why.

So during construction of said dress somehow the set backs highly frusterated me and I had to bunch it up, throw it into a pile while blurting out bad words and take a break.

First somehow managed to put panels on wrong so ripped seems and redid. Then I gathered the skirt and attached to the bodice sewing the three seam lines it called for and then having niece try it on. My sister noticed an error and brought it to my attention. Somehow...

Aveline Sews... for a person, not a hanger.

People are not shaped like hangers.  Luckily for us, huh?  This is why some shirts or dresses will look horrible when strung on a hanger, but look great when worn.  You need the curves that come with a human body to fill out a garment and make it look good.  This is why hemming a dress while it’s hanging on a hanger just will not work.  Or why lining up buttons to go up the back of a dress will get you uneven tension through the body once the dress is put on.

 This also explains why...

Dangerous Trends: Prologue

Written by Aindrias Mac-Solamh

This particular column is not for the faint of heart, in some senses of the word. Rather, it is designed Specifically for those with a faint heart, and who may not have a voice as loud or as boisterous as some. What this column is, and I refuse to use the word Blog, as it, as a word, sounds roughly akin to the sound one makes while vomiting, is a designation of some of the more sordid and problematic trends, as the title implies, that have been spreading like wildfire across the Society...

Nalbinding

Written by Yrsa Ketilsdottir

I learned to nalbinding from an amazign woman, Sigrid, many years ago.  I have always used commercially prepared wool yard to do my nalbinding because I have difficulty spinning thick yarn - I seem to be only able to spin fine.

So - I decided to tackle this spinning thing and grabbed some rovings and started spinning a thicker yarn I could use for nalbinding.  It worked . . . I guess.  It goes for a long while with nice even thickness and then I get a blob of fuzzy and then a thin thread...

Flax and Hemp Fiber (Processing and Spinning) an Introduction and How to guide by Kataryna Tkach

(note edited October 21,2010 for spelling/grammar errors)

Processing and spinning vegetable fibers is very different then working with animal fibers. Even the processing techniques for different types of fibers can vary widely. In some cases you are taking fiber off the leaves (Sisal), in others you are taking it off the seeds of the plant in the form of bolls (Cotton). For flax, hemp, and nettle you are taking the fiber from the outer section of the stem, called the bast. These fibers are...

Principality A&S Championship Competition

Written by Yrsa Ketilsdottir

I decided to enter our Principality A&S Competition this year.  I left myself with little time to complete everything as I decided to enter at the last minute.  Now I am wondering what the heck I was thinking!!

I am entering all early period norse textile stuff - 10th C mens tunic, nalbound socks and brocaded tablet weaving.  I have all the materials at home already with the exception of the silver wire for the tablet weaving.  Tracking that down has been a process but I finally found...
